Back To The Future – Redesigning Plastic For The Future

As a material, plastic is cost-effective with variable weight and has a maximum lifespan. These are three crucial factors for the clients of a plastic raw material company. Plastic pellets can be easily shaped, stretched and twisted into a variety of products.

How is Plastic Raw Material Products Made?

The main compounds of plastic raw materials are highly polymerised composites made from carbon and hydrogen, derived from substances such as petroleum and natural gas. Crude gasoline made by refining crude oil is the primary product that is used for making plastics. About 4% of the global crude oil is used for plastic manufacturing.

Plastics can be categorised into two groups.  This is based on the way they react when heat is applied to them – thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics.

  • Thermoplastics experience strong molecular motion, making them soften. As the temperature drops again, they become hard. This can be done repeatedly. This category includes, but is not limited to, PET, Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), and Polyvinylchloride. (PVC), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), Polypropylene (PP) and Polystyrene (PS).
  • Thermosetting plastics experience a mild molecular action but still soften. They form a dense 3D structure; therefore, once cooled, they cannot be successfully reheated and reused.

What Plastic Products Are Made From Plastic Raw Materials?

Packaging is the most significant market segment. In 2016 an analysis showed that packaging companies accounted for 42 per cent (146 million tonnes) of global consumption. This was followed by construction with 19 per cent (65 million tonnes).

Plastics At Present

The global asset management company Schroders states the following on plastics: “Chemical companies are starting to develop compostable, bio-based plastics etc. that can achieve reductions in material use. Bioplastics and compostable materials are gaining traction. The bioplastic market is set to grow at a 30% compound annual growth rate to 2030 (from 2013), compared to an average of 3% growth for fossil-based plastic. Bioplastics have their flaws: they can be hard to recycle, more expensive to make, and not yet available in large quantities, but improvements in cellulose conversion technology are expected to enhance the quality, quantity and cost. As manufacturers face pressure from their consumer-facing customers, the more innovative companies should gain market share. Most of those beneficiaries appear likely to emerge from the current industry leaders.”
