PVC Co-Extrusion Process

Two PVC compounds travel through separate extrusion streams before meeting through co-extrusion tooling and leaving the die as one continuous profile. In dual-material PVC extrusion, each stream retains the material behaviour required for its section of the profile.

The two compounds also have to work within the manufacturer’s processing conditions. Their processing temperature ranges and melt behaviour need to suit the co-extrusion setup, while the materials must also form a suitable interface where the two sections meet.

Technical literature on polymer co-extrusion identifies melt viscosity and melt elasticity as important factors in interface stability. This makes compound compatibility and processing behaviour part of the production specification, even though the tooling and machine settings remain with the product manufacturer.

Rigid and Flexible PVC Functions

Different areas of the profile can perform different physical jobs. Depending on the product design:

  • A rigid carrier can hold the profile in position while a flexible lip forms a seal.
  • A firm mounting section can support a softer cushioning or contact surface.
  • A rigid trim can incorporate a flexible edge that bends against a mating surface.
  • A dimensionally stable section can sit beside a flexible gripping or compression area.

Where the design allows it, rigid flexible PVC profiles can replace components that would otherwise be produced separately and assembled afterwards. Flexible PVC co-extrusion can therefore place the softer functional area directly alongside the supporting section, while co-extruded PVC profiles leave the die as a combined continuous form.

Compound Specification for Co-Extruded PVC Profiles

A rigid section may need stiffness, impact strength or dimensional stability, while the flexible portion may require a particular Shore hardness, compression behaviour or resistance to UV, oils or chemicals. We work from those end-product requirements when formulating compounds and can tailor characteristics such as hardness, colour, density, UV resistance, heat stabilisation and other specialised properties to suit the application. Samples can then be tested and approved before larger-scale production.

The strongest or most heavily modified formulation is not automatically the right commercial specification. Adding performance that the application does not require can add unnecessary cost. The useful specification is the one that delivers the required product behaviour while remaining suitable for the customer’s manufacturing process.
