Cling Film
Cling Film
While each brand of cling film is slightly different, most plastic wraps are made from PVC, PVDC, or polyethylene, which are all polymers derived from simple hydrocarbons.
How is Cling Film Made?
Cling film, also known as plastic wrap, is a thin, film-like plastic that sticks to itself, and is used for a variety of applications, such as keeping food fresh and it also has applications within the medical industry.
The very first form of plastic wrap was invented in 1911 but it has seen many changes over the years, both in the manufacturing process as well as the raw materials which are used to create it.
What Are the Raw Materials Used in Cling Film?
While each brand of cling film is slightly different, most plastic wraps are made from PVC, PVDC, or low density polyethylene, which are all polymers derived from simple hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbon examples include methane and ethylene, and come from natural gases.
What Does the Cling Film Manufacturing Process Look Like?
The manufacturing process for cling film can be simplified into three steps, including:
- • Raw material processing- In this step, certain chemicals are used to synthesise the polymers, and make them usable for creating cling film. Depending on which raw materials are used, this process can be quite complicated.
- • Compounding – PVC granules for Cling Film applications are created by combining the safest and most appropriate additives and compounds to form crystal clear PVC pellets/granules.
- • Creating the cling film- Cling film is created by using the extrusion process where the plastic granules melted down and then sent through a tube of plastic in which compressed air is blown to form bubbles, and thus stretches the plastic so it becomes a thin film. It is then rolled onto cardboard tubes that often have serrated edges so that the consumer can tear off pieces as they choose.
