Your business needs plastic compounds, so you’ve started to look for plastic pellet suppliers in your area. You soon realise that you’ll need to choose between rigid or flexible plastic compounds. They might look the same, but they’re different and are created to be used in different scenarios. If you aren’t sure which option would suit your business and its needs best, here’s what each type is best suited for so that you can make an informed decision.
Why Plastic?
Most compounds are made from polyvinyl chloride or PVC. This material is incredibly popular as it can be manufactured cheaply, is used for a variety of purposes and is long-lasting wherever and however you use it. The base material of PVC is hard, and when heated can change form. This is why it’s available to purchase in pellet form, as it can easily be added to a mould and heated. To further improve its consistency and appearance, sometimes chemical mixtures are added to alter it. Some chemicals will change its colour, give it resistance.
Or stabilise it.
To make flexible compounds, plasticisers are added to it, so that it eventually sets into a rubber-like consistency. The sky’s the limit when it comes to what it can be used for. Delicate items such as tubes, gloves, cling wrap, belts, hoses and more can be created using this type of compound. These items can be adjusted during manufacturing and will retain flexibility once created as well.
With a rigid compound, no plasticiser is added, keeping it stiff and inflexible once it’s been poured and then moulded or extruded. It’s frequently used in construction because it has superior resistance and is safe for humans to be exposed to. This means it’s often found in car doors and dashboards as well as in homes as shelving, furniture, containers and more.
