If you’re in the market to buy plastic pellets for plastic product manufacturing, then Pro-Plas Africa 2025 was a not-to-miss event. Taking place from 11 to 14 March at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, Nasrec, the tradeshow hosted more than 500 exhibitors who showcased their innovations in plastic packaging.
However, if you did happen to miss this industry-defining event, we’ll unpack some of the key takeaways here.
Sustainability
Far and away, the biggest issue being addressed at the Pro-Plas Africa 2025 event was sustainability. Overall, the event and its many exhibitors focused on presenting recyclable, reusable, and environmentally responsible plastic products and packaging solutions.
This included numerous live demonstrations of cutting-edge sustainable technologies, with a clear emphasis being placed on reducing plastic waste and minimising carbon footprints in production processes.
Other Notable Innovations
Several companies showcased key innovations in sustainable plastics and packaging technology.
- Adex Plastics & Machinery launched its MAMATA Vega 500SM pouch-making system, which is said to have the smallest carbon footprint in its product category. This novel product enables the production of 100% recyclable polyethylene-structured pouches through the use of the novel OptiSeal System, which makes it possible to program the seals on pouches in terms of time, pressure, and temperature.
- Starlinger showcased its odour-reduction technology, which prevents the downcycling of plastic scrap materials by permanently extracting any nasty smells from plastics during the recycling process to ensure clean, high-quality regranulate. The company also showed off its food-grade PET recycling technology.
- Lovell Industries exhibited its wide range of rigid thermoformed and die-cut food containers, which contain a minimum of 30% recycled PET.
- IPAK Connect unveiled its new range of sustainable films, including the new Zeest and Tarmim films, which form part of a sustainability initiative called Tajdid (meaning ‘renew’ in Arabic) being spearheaded by the company. The Zeest films are made from PCR, PIR bioPP-based recycled resin, while the Tarmim films are made from mono-material engineered films that improve their recyclability.
- Zibo Containers showed off its Econo Meat Tray Vacuum Skin range, which the company claims can extend the shelf life of fresh meat by more than 20 days. This product, which is more aesthetically appealing thanks to its clarity (making it ideal for retail use), can be sealed using the company’s specially modified atmosphere packaging machines from Italy.
