Water And Air Leaks – Your Windows Might Not Need Replacing

Window panes are not completely impermeable. Air and water can infiltrate around them. Often, people think that faulty gaskets are the cause of leaks in the window assembly. Window gaskets are PVC seals that cushion the glazing and provide weather protection. Even though gaskets do suffer wear and tear over time, the window might not need to be replaced if air and moisture are filtering through. Here are alternative solutions to weather infiltration, that don’t call for replacing the windows.

Gasket Replacement

PVC manufactured window gaskets are not eternal and will need to be replaced eventually when wear and tear are present. Gasket replacement involves removing the worn perimeter gaskets and installing new ones. Window gaskets last longer than sealants, therefore replacing window gaskets is the more popular option because it offers a long-term solution. However, even though it is long-lasting, it is also more expensive. Because replacing your window gaskets involves removing the window glazing, the process is disruptive and labor-intensive. Not only that but because some windows are older than others, replacement gaskets might not be available for those models. This means that the entire window would need replacing. The good news is that window gaskets need to be replaced less often than sealant because they last longer.

Window Frame Replacement

As mentioned, due to the age of some windows, gasket replacement is not always a feasible option. An alternative solution is to remove the top of the existing gasket bulb and replace it with an elastomeric sealant. Although this type of sealant is less expensive, it becomes an ongoing maintenance issue, which means it can be a drain on finances in the long-term. During installation, the sealant should be placed correctly to ensure adequate adhesion, and to avoid moisture and air coming in.

Storm Panes

To protect against leaks and drafts, an additional layer of glass – called a storm pane – can be installed. These are installed on the interior of the building. However, if they’re not installed properly, they can cause condensation problems, or prevent the window from opening and closing correctly. Storm panes are usually considered to be temporary measures; however, if they are installed correctly, there is no reason why they shouldn’t last.

In winter, you don’t want warm air escaping through your windows, and you don’t want cold air seeping through either. Also, you also don’t want rainwater leaking through your windows during the rainy seasons. Although PVC window gaskets are your best bet in avoiding this issue, there are other solutions available, such as window frame replacement and storm panes. Fortunately, IPC produces and supplies the best PVC granules for window gasket manufacturing. Get in touch with us.
